White Rock Cemetery

Lynchburg’s First Cemetery Established by African Americans for African Americans

 

White Rock Cemetery was opened in 1882 by Lynchburg’s oldest Black Methodist congregation, Jackson Street United Methodist Church. The cemetery is still owned and operated by the church today.

About the Cemetery

Historic White Rock Cemetery is located in the White Rock Hill neighborhood of Lynchburg, Virginia. It contains nearly 23 acres on a gentle slope from High Street to Fishing Creek. There are approximately 1,100 identified burials, most of which are located on either side of Blair Street in the original central seven-acre section. As many as 4,000 people may be buried there.
